Sally, I really have been having a hard time watching my garden die. What do you do to get through the winter?

Well Julia.. honestly I will say it is hard for me but I have some tips and tricks to get through the winter.

1. When ever you go grocery shopping make it a point to buy flowers. Make your home your garden.

2. If possible go somewhere warm in the winter. And make sure to go to as many gardens as possible. I promise flowers are the key to happiness.

3. Cook when you usually garden. It keeps you doing something. Plus the outcome is yummyyyy. Also, everyone is allowed to put on an extra couple of pounds for winter.

4. Look at pictures of your garden this summer. Hang them up different places in your house.

5. Plan your new garden. Winter will be over before you know it!

I ran into a great site explaining the reasons why everyone should compost. So if you don’t already know why.. run on over to the site http://whatcom.wsu.edu/ag/compost/fundamentals/ or even if you already compost check out the site.. it really shows the biological reasons behind composting.

Some of the highlights:

While it takes thousands of years for the earth’s forces to build good soil, we can help do this in 5 – 10 years by adding compost—which adds microorganisms, arthropods, worms, and humus to the soil.
The word “compost” comes from Latin where it meant “to put together.”
For centuries, farmers have made and used compost to improve soil. Composting is part of the earth’s biological cycle of growth and decay

I’m Green Thumb Sally, I want this blog to be about the whole green gardening community. Whether you are just learning more about green gardening or you’ve been doing it for years.. this blog is for you. I will do my best to frequently update the blog with gardening/environmental tips, recipes for a better garden, and anything and everything GREEN.
